WORKSHOP/LABORATORY -----------------------
To enhance the practical training of students, the Department can boast of five laboratories/workshops:
- The Machine Shop
- The Auto Workshop and Laboratory
- The Welding Workshop
- The Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Workshop and Laboratory
- The Mechanics of Machines Laboratory.
RESEARCH ---------------------------------------
Both teaching staff and students are engaged in research activities aimed at offering practical solutions to problems of industry. Specific examples include research on problems of fuel injection vehicles in Ghana, causes and economic effects of road accidents in the Greater Accra Region and modern trends in maintenance management.
It is hoped that with the introduction of the Polytechnic Journal our teaching staff will have the opportunity of getting their research findings published.
INDUSTRIAL LINKAGES -----------------------
The department has linkage programmes with the industry where our students go on industrial attachments and visitation. The students on attachment do practical work with the following companies during holidays: Tema Oil Refinery, Cocoa Processing Company, Electricity Company of Ghana, Accra Brewery Ltd., VALCO, etc.
RECENT DEVELOPMENTS -----------------------
Laboratory equipment to the tune of one billion cedis has been bought by Getfund for the department.
The department took delivery of laboratory equipment from the Spanish Government. The CNC equipment was installed and the training of trainers on the equipment took place from 26 th September to 30 th September 2005.
The department has been granted twenty thousand Dollars ($20,000) from TALIF to refurbish the laboratories.
The renovation of the laboratories and the workshops is underway.
SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY -----------------
Some of the teaching staff offers services to the community in various ways. Some are examiners to various national examination bodies such as the Technical Examinations Unit of the Ghana Education Service and the West African Examinations Council.
Representatives from the department also serve on interview panels in government establishments during recruitment process and promotion interviews, examples of such establishments are the Ghana Standards Board, the Electoral Commission and the Ghana Publishing Corporation.
PLANS ---------------------------------------- The B-Tech programme in Automotive Engineering will be started after accreditation has been given by the National Accreditation Board. |
