The Department has at present academic staff strength of seven (7) of which only three (3) are full time lecturers. It has one laboratory technician, one workshop assistant and a secretary.

PROGRAMMES/COURSES ------

The Department of Electrical/Electronic Engineering offers two tertiary programmes in HND Electrical/Electronic Engineering and Electrical Engineering Technician Part III (EET III). Two non-tertiary programmes (EET Part I and EET Part II) is been reintroduce in the coming 2005/2006 academic year.

The HND programme has six (6) major options which students can specialized. These include, Electrical power system, Telecommunication, Control systems, Computer hardware engineering, Power electronics and Hospital engineering.

GRADUATION ---------------------------

A total number of ninety five (95) and thirty six (36) students graduated in HND Electrical/Electronic Engineering in the year 2003 and 2004 respectively. In 2003 one student had 1 st Class and was adjudged the overall best student of Accra Polytechnic for that year and won a Unilever award for his effort. Five (5) of the graduands for the 2003 class were females. One student had 1 st class in 2004 and seven (7) women were among the graduating students.

RESEARCH ------------------------------

Through the supervision of staff, students in the department have been able to come out with innovative project works. Below are some of the projects by the students in collaboration with the lecturers:

  • Automatic railway interface controller
  • Computerized robotic arm
  • Electronic stethoscope
  • Software on students’ record tracking
  • Library suite software package
  • LED directional sign and DC/AC inverter

DONATION OF LABORATORY EQUIPMENT ------------------

The Spanish government made donation of some laboratory equipment to the department at the beginning of the year. The equipment which the department was in dive need will be put to its maximum use to enhance teaching and learning.

SERVICE TO COMMUNITY -------------------------------

The Department of Electrical/Electronic Engineering continues to offer the best possible services to the community both within and outside the Polytechnic, despite the various constraints facing the department. The services include installing, maintenance and repair of all electrical systems in the Polytechnic.

CHALLENGES --------------------------------

The large number of students put a lot of pressure on the few laboratory facilities. Due to these constraints the department continues to prepare students for only two (2) of the major options (i.e. Electrical power systems and Telecommunication). However, it is hoped that things would change after completion of the Electrical Block which is currently under construction and near completion.

PLANS ----------------------------------

The department is planning to start a Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) programme when staffing and material resources improve considerably. In the coming years the department will be committed to widening student participation in industry by linking up with such establishment like VRA, ECG, Ghana Telecom, Unilever, Alluworks etc. to enhance students’ practical training.

The department will also continue to explore new methods of teaching and learning using whichever new tool is available for the benefits of its students.
