STAFFING ------------------------

The department can boast of well trained, qualified and dedicated lecturers, instructors and technicians who are very committed to imparting knowledge and skills to students admitted into the department.

Currently, the academic staff strength stands at fifteen (15). Out of this number, thirteen (13) are in the full time section and the rest (2) are in the Part -time section. The breakdown of the academic staff is as follows;

One (1) PhD holder, Seven (7) MSc holders, Two (2) M Phil holders, Four (4) BSc holders, One (1) CTC II holder.

The department has in addition one (1) administrative assistant, two (2) technicians and one (1) messenger.

Presently, two members of staff are pursuing further studies abroad. One member is pursuing a PhD programme in the U.K and the other BSc programme in Denmark.

PROGRAMMES/COURSES ------

The department runs the following programmes;

HND Building Technology [Full Time and Part Time]

HND Civil Engineering [Full Time and Part Time]

CTC III.

Only the HND programmes would be run in 2005 – 2006 academic year.

STUDENT ENROLMENT -------------

Students’ enrolment continues to go up in accordance with the policy of NTCE. This policy cannot continue forever due to the fact that the expansion of facilities is not moving at the same rate.

The department has a total of six hundred and sixty-seven (667) registered students. This number includes sixty-four Part Time HND students.

The number of female students in the departments is small. They constitute only 3% of the total number of enrolled students.

COLLABORATION WITH INDUSTRY AND PROFESSIONAL BODIES ----------------

The department is still collaborating with Ghana Institute of Engineers and Ghana Institution of Surveyors. Special mention is the Geological Survey Department which has been supportive in the area of practical Geophysical surveying. General support from industry in terms of students’ placement is also very encouraging.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT -------------------------

Three members of staff were given full study leave with pay to pursue postgraduate courses in aspects of the Building and Civil Engineering. In their absence two (2) MSc part- time lecturers have been engaged.

TALIF ---------------------------------------------

An amount of about $100,159 has been approved by the teaching and learning innovative fund (TALIF) for the Building and Civil Engineering Department. The amount would be used to purchase soil and asphalt testing equipment and also to refurbish the departmental laboratory.

SPANISH GRANT -------------------------------

The department received various cement and tiles testing equipment from the Spanish Government in the course of the year. Gradually, then, the department is becoming self-sufficient in terms of laboratory test.

PLANS -------------------------------------------

The syllabus of the much talked about Bachelor of Technology programme in Construction has finally been sent to National Accreditation Board for accreditation. It is hoped that approval would be given soon.
