OVERVIEW ------------------------
The School of Applied Science operates in line with the legislative instrument that established the Polytechnics in Ghana. Its objective therefore is to provide a conducive learning, teaching and research environment capable of producing competent middle/high level specialist for Industry, Health and Commerce as well as the research and educational sector of the economy.
STAFFING ------------------------
The school has forty-six (46) academic staff: 21 females and 25 males. Two of the staff hold doctor of Philosophy degrees (Ph.D). Twenty-two (22) hold Master of Philosophy or Master of Science/Art Degrees (M/Phil or MSc. /M.A.). Four (4) are on study leave to obtain doctorate degree in various disciplines. Two (2) are also about to leave for such studies. Six (6) of the remaining number are on study leave with pay to undertake Master of Science and Master of Arts programmes. The rest are B. A. holders.
PROGRAMMES/COURSES -------------
The School of Applied Science comprises four (4) departments: The Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Department of Science Laboratory Technology, Department of Hotel Catering and Institutional Management and the Department of Fashion Design and Textiles.
Currently the School offers Higher National Diploma (HND) in all the four programmes. In addition, Non-HND programmes are run in two of the Departments; these are Advanced Fashion and Science Laboratory Technician programmes.
Two departments are about to be accredited to offer Bachelor in Technology programmes (B.Tech): these are the Department of Science Laboratory Technology and the Department of Fashion Design and Textiles.
STUDENT ENROLMENT ----------------
The student population stands at 1,000 with about half being females.
SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY ----------------
The School serves the community in diverse ways in the Health, Industrial Research and Educational sectors. It has also participated in symposia and quiz and made positive contributions to the community. PLANS -----------------------------------
All the four departments of the school will be running the Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programmes very soon. More Bachelor Degree holders will be granted study leave to pursue Master Degrees in the various disciplines. |
